As many of our volunteers probably know, Community Impact operates as a governing board at Columbia alongside other boards including SGB and ABC. Our status as a governing board dictates where our student funding comes from and provides us a framework within the university by which to exist. While many people are focused on working for big banks or doing research for medical school, Community Impact invites you to think about another type of summer opportunity – Community Service.

The Van Amson Fellowship provides housing and a $3,000 stipend for students who have secured a non-profit internship in New York City. It also invites students to propose a project within Community Impact to work on. This year we are excited to announce yet another type of project – a service learning fellowship. This fellow will work closely with a professor from the American Studies department to plan a service component to her Fall 2010 immigration course.

We are having our first information session Monday, Feb. 8 at 8:00 in Lerner 569.

For those of you who don’t know Glass House Rocks is one of the largest events of the year – Lerner is shut down and full of performances, free food, and, best of all, a Haiti Fundraiser.  It will be taking place Thursday, Feb. 4 from 9:00 – 1:00.  Find out more on facebook.

What about making new friends and helping new people through a new volunteer commitment?

Community Impact is looking for volunteers and work-study students to work with our 25 different groups. Whether it be teaching weekly GED classes, tutoring a struggling elementary school, or serving in a food kitchen, Community Impact provides students with meaningful opportunities.

Come learn about our programs this Tuesday from 6:00 – 9:00 in the Earl Hall Auditorium.

They are extending an open invitation to bring together those interested in taking action. Community Impact will be attending and encourages all of our coordinators and volunteers who are also interested in the efforts to attend. The meeting will be held at 9 pm tonight in Lerner Cinema, and will be led primarily by the Caribbean Students’ Association and the Haitian Students Club.
