Social Justice Opportunity
Are you passionate and knowledgeable about issues of social justice and/or environmental justice? Are you interested in facilitating workshops and discussions surrounding these issues with high schools students? Do you want to take a leadership role in developing a new program with an established non-profit that will affect young people for years to come? Apply to be a Coordinator with Under One Sky!
Under One Sky is a teen leadership program for young people ages 14-17 that aims to empower and enable adolescents to develop a unique knowledge and personal connection to the environment and use this to improve their own community, while developing self confidence and strong leadership, communication and critical thinking skills. The program will begin with two weeks living and learning in the woods at camp in August and then will continue throughout the school year with interactive workshops and trips that will connect what they have learned at camp to their own communities. Some of the topics we will focus on include sustainability and consumption, environmental justice, food justice, mobilization and action, and social justice, as well as building concrete leadership skills. The year will culminate with community-based social action projects that the young people will develop and lead. This program is part of Trail Blazers, a youth development organization based in New York City that runs a rustic sleepaway summer camp in the woods of New Jersey for youth from New York City and urban areas of New Jersey. An info sheet is attached that provides more in depth information about the program.
Under One Sky is a new initiative and we are looking for driven college students to lead in the development and implementation of this program. You will be working closely with the Executive Director of this established non-profit. It is a one-year unpaid commitment but there might be a possibility for a small stipend. Coordinators would ideally go to camp with the students from July 29th-August 15th and would then plan and facilitate workshops two Saturdays per month, as well as building the program for the following year. If you are not able to attend the summer session but are still very interested, you may still apply to be a coordinator. There will be some compensation for the two weeks at camp. This would be a great opportunity to develop and implement your own ideas in the context of this well-established non-profit!
You can access the application here: https://spreadsheets.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?formkey=dGRQbklkbDc3ZGlDRFoyS09MLV84REE6MQ and it is due at 11:59 PM on Sunday May 1st.
