Community Impact’s GED Program Among Most Successful in New York, Study Shows

Friday, October 21st, 2011

Community Impact’s (CI) GED high school equivalency program is one of the most effective in New York City, according to an analysis of adult education in the City by the New York State Education Department. CI’s GED program, which serves nearly 500 low-income adults annually, was ranked third out of nearly 50 programs in the City and received a “highly proficient” rating, the highest designation the State bestows upon GED programs. Community Impact’s GED program emphasizes fundamental educational skills in order to maximize long-term professional results. The comprehensive program includes pre-GED, GED, and Spanish GED courses, providing opportunities for students of a wide array of educational, professional and personal backgrounds. The GED curriculum offers students instruction in a range of subjects and elite exam preparation, as well as broader assistance in developing everyday and professional skills, including time management, critical thinking, and public speaking.

GED graduates further their progress through the additional services in CI’s comprehensive Jobs Education and Empowerment Program (J.E.E.P.). In addition to GED, CI offers the Job Road employment training program, Computer Training courses and the College Road program to prepare students for higher education. Community Impact’s J.E.E.P. services are delivered by a highly talented team of students and faculty from Columbia University and Barnard College along with neighborhood residents.

Generation Citizen is looking for volunteers!

Thursday, August 4th, 2011

Generation Citizen’s mission is to empower historically under-represented youth to be activeparticipants in the democratic system. We envision a country in which every individual isequipped and empowered to effectively participate in the political process as an engaged citizencapable of advocating for change. We fulfill our mission by training college students to partnerwith teachers to implement an action civics curriculum in lower-income secondary schools.

Generation Citizen’s focus on taking action sets us apart from other civics programs. GenerationCitizen students don’t read about the political process in a textbook, they learn it throughdirect engagement—meeting with representatives, lobbying local legislators, organizing letterwritingcampaigns, writing opinion pieces for newspapers, and making documentaries to raiseawareness about community issues they care about. Students then present their efforts to otherGC students and community leaders in a citywide Civics Day event. By uniting high school andcollege students in the program, we instill within students a sense of agency in the politicalprocess and their own lives.

Generation Citizen currently has active programs in Providence, Boston, and New York City.Over the last year, we empowered over 2,000 youth to use their voices as active citizens.

Tuesday, July 12th, 2011

“Revelations in E Minor”

Art Start primarily works in homeless shelters and probation offices throughout the city. An art start  motto is “process over product,” which manifests in an emphasis on the process of creating rather  then the production of a final masterpiece. Creativity (whether it is painting, drawing, writing songs or  poems) aids youth in development and increases their self-confidence. Art start serves as a source of  stability in an inherently unstable environment for the population of youth with whom we work.  Though I have often heard these values preached, since I began interning at Art Start in January, I have  never fully realized their true meanings until this week.
