We are seeking a Columbia student with an interest in Marketing and Social Networking to work with our non-profit organization. We are the Bloomingdale Family Program, a nationally-recognized Head Start Program with three centers close to the Columbus campus. There are two projects that need the help of someone with IT/communications skills:
1. E-letters. We need a volunteer to help us produce the simple, effective one-page e-letters that we distribute three or four times a year to donors and friends of the program. We provide text and photos, you would create the PDF for distribution. The volunteer would have an opportunity to use skills in layout and editing and would work with board members with professional experience in publications and PR.
2. Facebook. We are seeking a network-savvy student to help us upgrade our Facebook page and help us make it an effective tool in support of our fundraising and outreach.
For more information about the Bloomingdale program, please visit our website at www.bloomingdalefamilyprogram.org
Interested candidates should contact Sandy Roche, sroche1@nyc.rr.com or call 212-865-2524.

Community Impact’s (CI) GED high school equivalency program is one of the most effective in New York City, according to an analysis of adult education in the City by the New York State Education Department. CI’s GED program, which serves nearly 500 low-income adults annually, was ranked third out of nearly 50 programs in the City and received a “highly proficient” rating, the highest designation the State bestows upon GED programs. Community Impact’s GED program emphasizes fundamental educational skills in order to maximize long-term professional results. The comprehensive program includes pre-GED, GED, and Spanish GED courses, providing opportunities for students of a wide array of educational, professional and personal backgrounds. The GED curriculum offers students instruction in a range of subjects and elite exam preparation, as well as broader assistance in developing everyday and professional skills, including time management, critical thinking, and public speaking.
GED graduates further their progress through the additional services in CI’s comprehensive Jobs Education and Empowerment Program (J.E.E.P.). In addition to GED, CI offers the Job Road employment training program, Computer Training courses and the College Road program to prepare students for higher education. Community Impact’s J.E.E.P. services are delivered by a highly talented team of students and faculty from Columbia University and Barnard College along with neighborhood residents.

Time’s flying by, and school is starting up again in only a matter of weeks! While you’re getting ready to come back to Columbia, check out this great volunteering opportunity with Chess-in-the-Schools’ College-Bound Program:
Become a Volunteer Tutor at Chess-in-the –Schools!
The College-Bound Program (CBP) at Chess-in-the-Schools is an after-school, youth development program, dedicated to helping at risk youth gain access to top colleges and universities.
Activities within the CBP include SAT preparation classes, job skill training classes, mentoring, academic tutoring, cultural activities, and intensive chess instruction. The participants are from low-income neighborhoods throughout New York City, many of who need extra support throughout high school. That’s where you come in.
Our volunteer tutors work closely with the College-Bound Students from 4:30pm to 6:30pm, Mondays or Wednesdays, throughout the school year. During this time, they are partnered with a student or several students to help him/her with homework, study skills, standardized test prep and Regents exams. To be sure, being a tutor in any organization is rewarding experience. The College-Bound Program at CIS has an added win: Your work will result in getting low-income, typically disenfranchised, high school students to become more confident in their academic abilities, which in turn, helps shape the students they become forever.
For more information on how to become a tutor, please contact Jaclyn Garfinkel at jgarfinkel@chessintheschools.org or 212-643-0225 ext. 232.
